Speaker 1:

For the full visual experience of Pinar's presentation head to the virtual lighting design community platform at members of Para Lighting Design and consultancy, based in Istanbul. Today I'm going to talk about the future of lighting design. To talk about the future of lighting design. The title of my talk will be the future of lighting design aesthetics, sensory experiences and sustainability. So let's start with the presentation. So today we will examine the topic, my topic, with five head subtitles. The first one is the evolution of light, art and aesthetic approaches. The second one is an innovative lighting design for sensory experience. The third one is, of course, sustainability, the cornerstone of future lighting. And the fourth one, technology and smart lighting systems. Sustainability, the cornerstone of featured lighting. And the fourth one, technology and smart lighting systems. And last one, featured trends, human-centered design and societal impacts. So I believe it's necessary to consider the historical evolution to discuss the future of lighting design. So I will briefly and roughly talk about the historical evolution.

Speaker 1:

In the historical development, aesthetics, concepts in architecture and the light aesthetics in design will be prominent. As you know, in ancient times there were ritual illuminations and materials used, such as candles, oil lamps, torches, argan lamps. So areas, spaces were illuminated and art was created using these things. So the Renaissance period witnessed significant changes symbolizing a major transformation in art. Painters emphasized realism by adopting the technique of lighting, light and shadow, and perspective. Advances in perspective focused on more accurate and realistic representation of objects. While the effects of light increase the sense of depth and distance, by achieving dramatic effects through light-shadow contrast, artists aim to captivate the viewer. Bright and shaded transitions emphasize the volume and depth of objects, adding realism to the works. So the painters made anatomical details more pronounced with the use of light, preferring it to come from natural sources and be modeled with soft transitions. Following all these movements in art in the century, especially OP art and kinetic art, brought a new and contemporary approach to light usage. These movements focus on aesthetic experiences involving optical illusions, a sense of movement and viewer participation, placing light at the center of art, movement and viewer participation, placing light at the center of art. So, speaking of these art movements, it's like OP art, kinetic art, light art, light installations, electronic art and so on.

Speaker 1:

So if we need to talk about the aesthetic concepts now, in ancient Greek and Roman architecture, aesthetic features focus on symmetry, proportion and balance. Open-air temples and monuments were designed using natural light, while open courtyards or special openings were generally preferred for lighting indoor spaces In medieval aesthetics. Gothic architecture focused on ornamentation and details. So the aesthetic effects of the colored stained glass windows, the place of the religious themes in design, were highlighted, highlighted In Gothic cathedrals. Tall and colorful stained glass windows brought colored light into indoor spaces, creating a mystical atmosphere. In the Middle Ages, dramatic contrast of light and darkness added a mystical atmosphere to indoor spaces, emphasizing the religious atmosphere. In Renaissance, the aesthetic research of artists in Renaissance period on perspective, light, shadow usage and anatomy comes to the forefront. Ideal proportions, rationality and order are emphasized. So during the Renaissance, architects began to emphasize indoor spaces more with perspective and light games. So, like Renaissance painters, architects also brought architectural details to the forefront using light and shadow.

Speaker 1:

In Baroque and Rococo aesthetics I would say there is a dramatic and more emotional design approach in the Baroque period. Compared to the other period it's more ornate, light and elegant. In the Baroque palaces and churches were often illuminated with surprisingly ornate chandeliers and candle systems Surprisingly ornate chandeliers and candle systems. The effect use of light has been important to emphasize architecture and add a dramatic atmosphere to indoor spaces. So in neoclassical and romantic aesthetic there is a more simplified aesthetic understanding. Here we see the emotional expression of the romantic period and the influence of nature. Indoor spaces, large public spaces, large public areas, shopping malls and streets began to be illuminated with electricity.

Speaker 1:

In modern period aesthetics, we see the emergence of minimalism, functionalism and more other modern aesthetic approaches. The influence of abstract art and emphasizes on geometric forms are highlighted In contemporary aesthetics. Different aesthetic approaches and the styles in contemporary architecture stand out. We see that the influence of technology and the sustainability contributes to aesthetics. So in modern architecture, minimalism and functionality take precedence. Throughout this process, each era has enriched aesthetically and technologically redefining the art of light in the modern art world. All right, when we talk about innovative lighting design for the future, should we focus on products or sensory experience, or should we start from this athletic structure and consider its contribution to sensory experience?

Speaker 1:

The relationship between sensory experience and lighting established in a space is highly valuable. The connection between sensory perception and lighting is a fundamental factor that influences users' emotional and physical experiences in a space. So in this context, the combination of visual perception and the light is quite crucial. Eyes create the atmosphere of the space by perceiving ambient light, so the use of intensity and natural light significantly affects visual perception. Light enhances sensory contrast by making objects in the space stand out. So the adequate contrast creates a sense of depth and emphasizes the dimension of the space. Light creates a sense of movement by casting shadows on the objects. Dynamic lighting effects enrich the sensory experience.

Speaker 1:

But of course, while discussing all of this, it's essential to emphasize the importance of a human-centric lighting design approach. Human-centric lighting design prioritizes users' comfort, safety and overall experience. In this context, lighting arrangements are organized according to tasks, so ergonomic lighting reduces eye fatigue. The color temperature of light sources can affect our circadian rhythm. A color temperature close to natural light increases users' energy level throughout the day. So appropriate lighting levels for the environment enable the users' eyes to adapt quickly. So adequate contrast and consistent lighting enhance the comfort in the space. So to enhance the sensory experience, we also need to implement design strategies. So design strategies to enhance the sensory experiences include incorporating. So design strategies to enhance the sensory experiences include incorporating other sensory elements along with the light. So in the scope, pleasant scents used in conjunction with lighting effects can enhance the sensory experience definitely In addition to light. Using tactile surfaces allows users to physically interact with space. So light games and storytelling can provide users with an emotional and mental experience.

Speaker 1:

Of course, when discussing the future of lighting design, sustainability should not be forgotten. It's the cornerstone of the future of lighting design. Sustainability should not be forgotten. It's the cornerstone of the future of lighting. In the lighting design of the future, there will be a strong relationship between aesthetics and function, sensory experience and sustainability. Enrichment occurs with the correct use of light. Reflecting a sustainable approach by combining energy efficiency and environmentally friendly design principles Does the aesthetic appeal of the design, combined with the energy savings and environmental responsibilities, will shape a lighting paradigm for the future. In this context, applications such as the use of Energy-efficient lamps and fixtures, automatic sensor integration and adjustable lighting levels according to needs allow us to envision a future where aesthetics and functions are integrated with sustainability.

Speaker 1:

Maximizing the use of natural light through elements such as windows and skylights in the buildings reduces energy consumption and improves the indoor quality. The use of recyclable materials in production of lighting fixtures and components reduces waste and contributes to the conservation of the natural resources. Long-dusting can easily maintainable lighting products, reduce waste and also allow for more efficient use of the resources. Implementing strategies to reduce the carbon footprint in the production, transportation and disposal processes of lighting systems is a correct solution to minimize environmental impacts. So the electricity is one of the largest consumers of energy required for transportation. Required for transportation, we either need to reduce the amount of energy required for production or decrease dependence on carbon emitting fuels. Of course, while discussing all of this, we must not overlook one thing In evaluating these aspects, there is a system that is now part of our daily lives and assists us. It's artificial intelligence. With the help of artificial intelligence, we can assess all these elements more innovatively.

Speaker 1:

The impact of digital control in smart lighting systems on the energy management and the flexibility of lighting design is significant. Sensor technology has advanced considerably various sensors, such as motion sensors, light sensors and even air quality sensors into our concepts. Actually, I won't go into the details right now, as it is not the focus of our current discussion, but it can be said that using the sensors in smart lighting systems provides a more adaptive and energy-efficient lighting. Examining the effect of color-changing lighting on the user experience from the perspective of color psychology is possible. Dynamic, interactive color changes have a significant impact on the ambient of a space. Touch controls, the use of smart phone applications and user-friendly control interfaces enable lighting systems to become more interactive and customizable. It's possible to discuss how digital art can be integrated into lighting design and enrich the aesthetic of space. So the digital art projects have considerable impacts on the users and the experience of a design of the spaces. I mention this because it's not about using the latest products, but rather focusing on what we can achieve and buy using technology. I believe we should concentrate on this scenario In the future of lighting design. The impact on society becomes highly significant alongside human-centered design.

Speaker 1:

If there is a term that will resonate deeply with people, it's artificial intelligence. I mentioned already about this, but now we can talk about artificial intelligence now. So when discussing the future of lighting design, the potential of applications of AI should be emphasized. A design approach focused on user needs is a crucial aspect that demands attention. Artificial intelligence algorithms analyze users' lighting preferences and habits. For example, in an office setting, ai can determine lighting preferences based on a person's energy levels throughout the day and work processes. Another example in a hotel lobby, ai-supported lighting systems can automatically adjust based on guests' arrival and departure times, weather conditions and the overall atmosphere of the space the overall atmosphere of the space.

Speaker 1:

Ai-supported lighting designs play an important role in enhancing the atmosphere of the space and improving the user's quality of life.

Speaker 1:

Another example in a coffee project, lighting schemes that vary according to customers' preferences and the different times of the day, facilitated by AI, can create a warm and inviting atmosphere like a welcoming career.

Speaker 1:

So AI-supported lighting designs can adjust lighting colors and tones based on users' emotional states. If I give another example in a yoga studio, an AI-supported lighting system can create a light atmosphere suitable for different meditation sessions, contributing to users' relaxation. In a home, an AI-supported lighting system can personalize light colors and intensity according to individual's activities in the room and align with their circadian rhythms. It can support the natural waking processes with lighter tones in the morning and encourage relaxation with warmer colors in the evening. So when creating AI-supported lighting designs, it's essential to adopt a design process that involves the participation of communities and cultures. For instance, in a still lighting planning project, an application that encourages feedback from the local population for lighting systems tailored to cultural and societal needs can be employed. Of course, these details contribute to enhance the quality of life. So, with the technology, anything is possible, as long as we refrain from imposing limiting rules on ourselves. Thank you.
